The Best Investment Tracking Spreadsheet for Google Sheets in 2024

Fact Checked By Cindy Wong

Looking for an investment tracking spreadsheet to organize your 2024 portfolio? Tracking your investments is just as important as the investment process. I’ve invested in multiple companies, and keeping track of my investments was a nightmare. That was before I started keeping tabs on my investments using a Google Sheets investment tracking spreadsheet.

I will explain how to add to a portfolio tracker in Sheets in this article. I’ll show you three great investment tracker spreadsheets I use, demonstrate how the templates work, and provide insights into how you can use them in Google Sheets. Feel free to check them out and see which one suits your needs.

What Is an Investment Tracking Spreadsheet?

An investment tracking spreadsheet, also known as a stock portfolio tracker, allows you to easily check up on your investment portfolio by providing simple-to-see stock changes through visualized data and current prices.

An investment tracking spreadsheet has multiple purposes. You can enter buy, sell, stock split, cash dividends, mutual funds, and stock dividends to track each asset conveniently on a desktop or from your mobile device.

How To Use an Investment Tracker Template in Sheets

There are many investor tracking tools you can use to organize your assets. Many investor tracking tools will offer a financial dashboard that automatically tracks your investments and spending. They also offer the added benefits of privacy, simplicity, and customization.

When you open an investment portfolio template in Google Sheets, here are some things you should add:

1. Tickers

Ticker symbols are unique identifiers used to represent the stock names in the market. Adding them to your investor tracking spreadsheet makes it easier to identify the stock name at a glance.

2. Name

Although ticker symbols are extremely helpful, they can often be vague, so just adding tickers can be more confusing than helpful. For example, GOOG for Google is easy to identify, but PECO for Phillips Edison & Company can confuse some investors.

3. Category

Adding the stock category can make it easier to group various stocks, which keeps track of a specific type of stock.

4. Current Price

Having updated prices of your shares is crucial for an investment tracker. Thankfully, Google Sheets has a built-in function that can do calculations to get prices in real time.

5. Shares

Adding the amount of shares you’re holding for a specific stock makes it easier to identify the total price of your investment. This can be calculated by multiplying the stock’s current price by the number of shares.

6. Initial Investment

Adding the amount of money that you initially invested in a stock can be used to calculate the profit by subtracting the initial investment from the current total price of the stock.

Portfolio Tracking Spreadsheet (My Favorite)

Investment tracking spreadsheet—portfolio tracker

I created this portfolio management spreadsheet for users who want to track their shares in several companies using a simple investment tracker. This Google Sheets stock portfolio template is divided into two smaller sections.

In the first area, I added columns where you can input your stock information to see details about its price and the profit from that investment. You can enter the Ticker symbol in the column, and the template will get the values using GoogleFINANCE.

The company Name, Currency, Price, and Change percentage will be calculated automatically. Then, you can add the Initial investment amount, and the spreadsheet will calculate the Net Profit amount and percentage in a new column.

On the right side, you can see the total Shares, Net Profit, and Initial investment. Below this data, you can add the types of Categories for the stocks, which can be selected using a dropdown menu in the main table.

Besides the tables, you can see a pie chart that shows the percentage of shares in every company and a bar graph that shows your shares in each category.

I recommend using this stock tracking spreadsheet in Google Sheets if you own various types of shares in multiple companies. It helps you stay on top of your investments with an intuitive and visually appealing spreadsheet.

Asset Investment Tracker Spreadsheet

Asset investment tracker spreadsheet

I created this investment spreadsheet template for users who don’t want to track every detail about the stocks but want to see an overview of the assets and the profits or losses. This spreadsheet works well on desktop and mobile devices and has two parts.

The top-left part shows an overview of the stocks. Here, you can see your total Initial Investment, the Current Total Value of the total stocks, and the percentage of Change in prices. Towards the right side of the table is a bar chart that can be used to see the Current Value and your Initial Investment in that stock.

In the main section, I added columns where you can add information about your stocks. Add the stock Symbol and name of the Exchange in the first two columns. This will get the Stock Name and Current Value.

Then, add the number of Shares you have and the Initial Investment. This will calculate the Change percentage in the current price of the shares and the initial investment.

You can also choose the category of the stocks, also known as the stocks data type. To change the names of the predefined categories, go to the Category sub-sheet and replace the existing options. You can then choose the categories from a dropdown menu in the cells.

I recommend using this template if you’re looking for a solid investment spreadsheet Google Sheets that isn’t too complex while helping you stay on top of your investments.

Advanced Spreadsheet for Tracking Investments

Advanced investment tracker spreedhseet

I created this spreadsheet for users who want a template that allows them to track their investments and see a live overview of their stock data. This Google Sheet portfolio tracker calculates and displays the data using functions, charts, and graphs.

I divided this free investment tracker into two smaller parts. The first section lets you store and visualize your investment data, while the second area shows an in-depth view of a chosen stock.

In the first section, I sub-divided it into three smaller sections. The first subsection (towards the top) lets you compare your initial investment with the current price of every stock in the spreadsheet using a bar graph.

In the second section, I added columns where you can store and track your stock data. Most of the columns contain formulas to save you from having to enter data manually. Here, you can enter the Ticker name of the stock, the number of Shares you have, and the Initial Investment.

The stock Name, Current Price, Current Total, and Returns will be calculated using this data. Towards the right side is the third section, showing a pie chart with the ticker symbols and the percentage of shares in your portfolio.

In the second area, users can see the details of a chosen stock. To see the details, enter the stock ticker in the grey cell under Stock Name and enter the months in the cell under Time Period. This will get that particular stock’s data over the specified months and display it in the columns below. A line graph will show the stock’s performance over time on the right side.

I recommend this template for investors who want to track their stocks and look at detailed information on a specific stock.
