What Is an Investment Tracking Spreadsheet?
An investment tracking spreadsheet, also known as a stock portfolio tracker, lets you monitor your portfolio by pulling live stock prices into visualized data automatically. No manual price lookups required.
An investment tracking spreadsheet has multiple purposes. You can log buy and sell transactions, stock splits, cash dividends, mutual funds, and stock dividends to track each asset from your desktop or mobile device.

Asset Investment Tracker Spreadsheet
I created this investment spreadsheet template for users who want a clean overview of their assets and profits without tracking every detail. It works well on desktop and mobile.
The top-left panel shows your total Initial Investment, Current Total Value, and the percentage Change in prices. A bar chart on the right lets you compare Current Value against Initial Investment for each position at a glance.
In the main table, add the stock Symbol and Exchange. The template pulls the Stock Name and Current Value automatically. Add the number of Shares and your Initial Investment, and the Change percentage calculates itself.
You can also categorize your stocks using a dropdown menu. To customize the category options, go to the Category sub-sheet and replace the existing names.
I recommend this template if you want a solid investment spreadsheet that stays out of your way while keeping you on top of your portfolio.
Advanced Spreadsheet for Tracking Investments
I created this spreadsheet for investors who want live data visualization alongside a detailed view of individual holdings. It calculates and displays everything using functions, charts, and graphs.
The spreadsheet has two main areas. The first stores and visualizes your full portfolio. At the top, a bar graph compares your initial investment with the current price across every stock. Below that, enter the Ticker, number of Shares, and Initial Investment โ the template calculates Name, Current Price, Current Total, and Returns automatically. A pie chart on the right shows the percentage breakdown of each position in your portfolio.
The second area gives you an in-depth view of any single stock. Enter the ticker in the Stock Name cell and a number of months in the Time Period cell. The template pulls that stock’s historical data and plots it on a line graph โ useful for reviewing performance before adding to or trimming a position.
I recommend this template for investors who want to track their full portfolio and drill into individual stock performance over time.

Portfolio Tracking Spreadsheet (Make Your Own)
I created this portfolio management spreadsheet for users who want to track shares across multiple companies and have a guide to build their own version from scratch.
Enter the Ticker symbol in the first column, and the template uses GOOGLEFINANCE to pull the company Name, Currency, Price, and Change percentage automatically. Add the Initial Investment amount and the spreadsheet calculates Net Profit in both dollar and percentage terms.
The right side shows totals for Shares, Net Profit, and Initial Investment. Below the main table, assign Categories to your stocks using a dropdown, then see them visualized in a pie chart (portfolio breakdown by company) and a bar graph (breakdown by category).
I recommend this template if you hold shares across many companies and want an intuitive, visual overview โ and a solid starting point if you want to customize your own tracker.

How To Use an Investment Tracker Template in Google Sheets
There are many portfolio tracking tools available, but Google Sheets gives you the added benefits of full customization, privacy, and no subscription fees. The templates above use the GOOGLEFINANCE function to pull live stock data automatically โ the same function that powers real-time currency conversion and stock price lookups across Google Sheets.
When you open the template, here are the six fields that drive everything:
1. Tickers
Ticker symbols are the unique identifiers used to represent stocks in the market. Adding them to your tracker lets GOOGLEFINANCE pull the right data automatically. For most major US stocks, the plain ticker works fine (AAPL, MSFT, GOOGL). For international stocks or when a plain ticker returns the wrong result, use the exchange prefix format โ for example, LSE:BARC for Barclays on the London Stock Exchange. You can also import stock prices into Google Sheets using additional methods if you need data beyond what GOOGLEFINANCE provides.
2. Name
Although ticker symbols are useful, they can be ambiguous. GOOG for Google is obvious, but PECO for Phillips Edison & Company is not. The templates pull the full company name automatically once you enter the ticker, so there is no need to type it manually.
3. Category
Adding a stock category makes it easier to group positions by type โ tech, dividend, ETF, crypto, and so on. The category dropdown in the templates is fully customizable from the Category sub-sheet.
4. Current Price
Prices are pulled live by the GOOGLEFINANCE function and refresh approximately every 20 minutes while the sheet is open. You never need to enter a price manually. If you hold positions in multiple currencies, the Portfolio Tracker template includes a Currency column that pulls the denomination automatically โ useful for international stocks. For more on handling multi-currency data in Sheets, see the guide on converting currency in Google Sheets.
5. Shares
Enter the number of shares you hold for each position. The template multiplies this by the current price to calculate your total position value, and subtracts your initial investment to show the gain or loss in both dollar and percentage terms.
6. Initial Investment
Enter the total amount you paid for each position (shares multiplied by your purchase price). This is subtracted from the current total to calculate your net profit. Keeping this accurate is the most important manual input in the tracker.

Investment Tracker Google Sheets FAQ
Can Google Sheets track stocks automatically?
Yes. The templates use the GOOGLEFINANCE function to pull live stock prices, company names, and change percentages directly from Google Finance. Prices refresh approximately every 20 minutes while the sheet is open โ no manual entry needed.
What ticker format does Google Sheets use?
Google Sheets accepts plain ticker symbols (AAPL, GOOGL) and exchange-prefixed formats (NASDAQ:AAPL, NYSE:GS). If a plain ticker returns the wrong stock or an error, add the exchange prefix. For international stocks, use the exchange code followed by a colon and the ticker symbol โ for example, LSE:BARC for Barclays on the London Stock Exchange.
How often do stock prices update in these templates?
GOOGLEFINANCE refreshes prices approximately every 20 minutes when the spreadsheet is open. Prices do not update while the sheet is closed. To force a manual refresh, press Ctrl+Shift+F9 on Windows or Cmd+Shift+F9 on Mac.
Do these templates work on mobile?
Yes. All three templates work in the Google Sheets app for iOS and Android. The Asset Tracker and Portfolio Tracker are the most mobile-friendly. The Advanced Tracker has more columns and is best used on a desktop or tablet for the full chart experience.
Can I track international stocks in these templates?
Yes. GOOGLEFINANCE supports stocks listed on major international exchanges. Use the exchange prefix format (e.g., LSE:BARC for Barclays). The Portfolio Tracker template includes a Currency column that pulls the denomination automatically for multi-currency portfolios.
Can I track crypto in these templates?
The templates support major cryptocurrencies through GOOGLEFINANCE using pairs like BTCUSD or ETHUSD. For a dedicated crypto setup, see the free crypto portfolio tracker templates.
What happens if a ticker shows an error?
A #N/A or #ERROR result usually means the ticker is misspelled, the exchange is not supported, or Google Finance had a brief outage. Check the symbol spelling first, then try adding the exchange prefix. Outage errors clear automatically when Google Finance comes back online.
Can I add my own stocks to the template?
Yes. All three templates are fully editable. Enter the ticker symbol in the designated column and the formulas populate name, price, and change data automatically. To remove a stock, delete the row.
How do I make a copy of the template?
Open the template link, then go to File and select Make a Copy. This saves a personal copy to your Google Drive that you can edit freely. Do not request edit access to the original file.
Can I use these templates alongside a budget tracker?
Yes โ many users pair the investment tracker with a separate sheet for budgeting or expense tracking. For a complete personal finance setup in Google Sheets, the Google Sheets budget templates and the expense tracker template are good companions.
Wrapping Up
All three templates are free to copy and fully customizable. The GOOGLEFINANCE function handles the live data โ your job is just to enter the tickers, share counts, and initial investment amounts. From there, the template does the rest.
To get your copy, open any template link above, click File, then Make a Copy.
If you want to go deeper on the function powering these trackers, the full GOOGLEFINANCE function guide covers every attribute and use case. For broader personal finance tracking in Sheets, the Google Sheets accounting templates are worth a look too.
